Inside Line Promotions – MERCED, Calif. (March 11, 2020) – Dominic Scelzi hustled to his third consecutive top-10 finish during Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition last Friday at Merced Speedway.

The outing made him one of only two drivers to earn a top 10 in each of the first three races of the season for the series. It also propelled him into the lead in the championship standings, although he isn’t running for points.

The night began with Scelzi maneuvering from seventh to fifth place in a heat race on a challenging track.

“I definitely felt like I had a decent heat race being able to pass a couple of cars, being in the first heat race and drawing as bad as we did,” he said. “We were definitely better than 24th in points. We were really fast, but you can’t do much when the track is wet and you start in the back. We were lucky to make the qualifier. Winning that was big for us points-wise.”

Scelzi followed the heat race by winning a qualifier from the pole position, which elevated him to 11th in points out of the 50-plus drivers. He lined up on the inside of the sixth row for the main event.

“We got caught behind a car on the first lap and I lost some spots because they got a bad start,” he said. “It took me probably 20 laps to get by that car. I felt like if I could have cleared them earlier I could have run sixth or seventh, but that’s racing.”

Scelzi officially gained two positions to end the night with a ninth-place result.

“I ran 30 laps as hard as I’ve ever run to pass two cars,” he said. “It’s the first time in a long time I’ve seen a track so even on the top and the bottom. Everyone was just the same speed. I ran around the top and ran around the bottom. The track was outstanding. It was just too good believe it or not.”

Scelzi plans to head to Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., on Friday before the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series season begins on Saturday at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif.
