Inside Line Promotions – IRWINDALE, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2019) – It didn’t take long for Giovanni Scelzi to begin to make a name for himself in the pavement world of racing.

Scelzi earned a victory last Saturday during his first career pavement race. He led approximately the final 15 laps to score the triumph in the spec late model division at Irwindale Speedway, where he piloted a car owned by Tim Huddleston.

“I thought it went really well,” Scelzi said. “It took me a while to get comfortable and to find the edge. I pretty much threw everything I knew away and started fresh. It was different, but I really enjoyed it. Having a spotter was different. It was cool to have a new challenge.”

Scelzi said he made approximately 150 laps during practice sessions on Thursday and Friday prior to Saturday’s event. The night began with Scelzi qualifying fourth quickest.

“We’d been seventh quickest in both test sessions and couldn’t break through to get in the top five,” he said. “In qualifying I ripped two good laps off. It held on for quick time a while, but there they line up qualifying with the fastest drivers going last so we got beat by the last three cars. I was happy to be closer to the front than we were in practice.”

A 10-car inversion lined him up on the inside of the eighth row for the 40-lap main event.

“On the first corner I got passed on the inside and fell to 10th or 11th,” he said. “We got a decent green flag run in and got to fifth. I worked the bottom mostly, but I was able to maneuver around the track as I needed. I got the leader on Lap 25 and led the last 15 laps.

“On pavement you’re at the edge where it’s fast and then you cross it and you spin out. With dirt you’re always sliding with the right rear stuck out. It took me a while to find that edge and then we started moving forward.”

While Scelzi is now 1-for-1 in pavement competition, the victory was his eighth of the season as he has seven winged sprint car triumphs on dirt. He’s been victorious in Australia along with his home state of California, North Carolina, Iowa and Indiana.
