Inside Line Promotions – DODGE CITY, Kan. (Sept. 23, 2019) – Dominic Scelzi captured the Hard Charger Award during his debut at Dodge City Raceway Park last Friday.
Scelzi opened the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader by qualifying 16th quickest and placing sixth in a heat race before his rally from 16th to 11th in the A Main earned the award for passing the most cars.
“I think we had a lot more speed than what the results showed all weekend,” he said. “The first night I missed my line and didn’t qualify very well. I went from sixth to fifth in the heat race and when I tried to get fourth we fell back to sixth. I hate to lose positions, but at least we were going for it. Then in the feature it was tough to pass. Everyone was right around the bottom. We got what we could.”
Scelzi took his momentum from Friday’s strong finish into Saturday’s event. He qualified sixth quickest out of the 25 drivers before a third-place run in a heat race locked him into the ninth starting position for the main event.
“We went out pretty early and we qualified sixth,” he said. “Brad (Sweet) got by me in the heat, which I can’t be too upset about because of how well he’s running. We ran around eighth or ninth about half the main event. I moved to the bottom in turns one and two and got to seventh. Fifth and sixth were racing pretty hard in front of me. I was on their rear bumpers with about three laps to go. We went into turn three and I lost the air on my nose and over we went. The wind was blowing about 40 miles an hour. I guess I got close enough that with the wind it literally turned me right.”
Scelzi’s night ended early after crash. He was credited with a 16 th-place result.
Next up on the schedule will be his debut at a pair of tracks along with two nights at one of his toughest ovals. The action begins on Wednesday at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., before shifting to Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, on Friday for the BeFour the Crowns Showdown with the World of Outlaws. Scelzi will return to Eldora Speedway on Saturday to race with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions. The weekend concludes on Sunday at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind., with the FAST Series.
“I’m optimistic,” he said. “I think we have a good balance in our race car. I have confidence in the car. Eldora is a place I’ve struggled at probably more than any track in my career and I’ve never been to Jacksonville or Kokomo. I’m excited and looking forward to the challenge of a couple of new tracks and a place I’ve struggled at in the past.”
