Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Sept. 4, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi was in contention for another victory last Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway.

Scelzi and the Roth Motorsports team kicked off the night by setting quick time during qualifying for the ninth time this season.

“We were really good all night,” he said. “We were quick time by I think three tenths of a second. The track was pretty rough and had a lot of grip in it. We were really good in the heat and in the dash, too.”

Scelzi maneuvered from fourth to second place in a heat race to advance into the dash, in which he placed third to start the 30-lap main event on the inside of the second row.

“We rode in third for a bit and then passed Cory Eliason about 10 laps in for second,” he said. “I drove around Mitchell Faccinto for the lead with 10 laps to go.”

Scelzi was leading the race with approximately five laps remaining when a lapped car half spun in turn two directly in front of him.

“He spun and I hit him with my right front,” he said. “I half spun and kept going, but when I got going again I had fallen to fifth. With only a few laps remaining I couldn’t make up any ground.”

Scelzi ended with a fifth-place result, which was his 17th top five of the season.

“It was frustrating not to win,” he said. “On a bright note the track was really rough and we’ve struggled on rough stuff. We were the fastest car all night so that gives us some confidence.”

Scelzi will return to action this Wednesday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., with the Civil War Sprint Car Series. Scelzi captured a fourth-place result in March during his 360ci winged sprint car debut at the quarter-mile oval and he placed second in June during a 410ci winged sprint car show there.

“We’ve had some good runs there so I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “Hopefully we can build some momentum on the smaller tracks and it will help us moving forward.”
