Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi is optimistic following a pair of tough results last weekend during the Penny Newman Grain Cotton Classic at Keller Auto Speedway.

Scelzi was in contention for top-five finishes and potential podium results during both nights before a miscue ended each race early.

“We drew a late number for qualifying,” Scelzi said. “The track didn’t really slow down, but the cushion got more treacherous. I just wasn’t very comfortable. We changed a few things around for the heat race and we made it up to third.”

Scelzi rebounded from the qualifying run to charge from sixth to third place in his heat race. That locked him into the 18thstarting position for the main event.

“We were really good in the feature,” he said. “I was running through the middle most of the race. The track was extremely slick. We threw some stuff at it like we would at Attica Raceway Park or Atomic Speedway in Ohio and it seemed to work. I had a lot of drive in the car. I was able to go where nobody else was going. It was really cool.

“I got up to the sixth position. We had a restart with five laps to go and we had a steering box failure. It broke going into turn one. I got it slowed down enough where it’d turn enough to drive off the end of the track and I took it back to the pits. I was really bummed out. I think we could have had a third-place car.”

Scelzi drove his family owned sprint car on Saturday during the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series portion of the Cotton Classic. He timed in eighth quickest during qualifying before placing fourth in a heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the sixth row for the main event.

“We went 11th to seventh in the first four laps,” he said. “Then a car in front of me clipped an infield tire. It moved it out maybe a foot. I barely tapped it and it bent the drag link. We weren’t able to get to get it changed in time.”

The race restarted before Scelzi was able to exit the work area as he ended with a 22nd-place finish.

Scelzi is slated to return to competition this Thursday through Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., for the 23rd annual Trophy Cup. He will drive for the Van Lare Family during the marquee event.
