Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2018) – Dominic Scelzi produced a pair of top-five finishes last Saturday during the 33 rd annual Cotton Classic.

Scelzi and his family owned team competed in both the 410ci and 360ci winged sprint car divisions at Keller Auto Speedway during the marquee event that welcomed more than 50 combined cars between the two classes.

“It was great to overcome adversity,” he said. “Even though qualifying in the 410 and our heat races in both classes didn’t go as well as we wanted we had strong runs in each main event to earn top-five finishes.”

Scelzi kicked off the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series portion of the night by qualifying 13th quickest. He then advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race to lock into the 13th starting position for the A Main.

“I got to sixth pretty quick,” he said. “A few laps later I got into fifth and raced for fourth. I got by Shane (Golobic) at one point and Bud (Kaeding) at one time, but I was searching. I was just missing a little bit. I kept switching what I was doing to try to make it a little better.”

Scelzi rallied from 13th to a fifth-place finish. It earned him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.

He was just as strong in the Sprint Car Challenge Tour action, qualifying third quickest in his group before placing second in a heat race. Scelzi maneuvered from his 10th starting position to post a third-place finish, which gives him 20 top fives this season.

“I passed Shane and I passed Rico (Abreu) at separate parts of the race and yellow flags put me back to third each time,” he said. “I was more frustrated that the yellows fell when they did because I felt like we could have stolen a win.”

Scelzi is now facing the 25th annual Trophy Cup this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif.

“I think with Trophy Cup and big races you can’t get pumped up for them,” he said. “You really have to roll in there like it’s any other race. We have to time in really good, pass three cars in our heat race (to earn a lock-in position into the feature) and move forward a few spots in the feature. Every race you have a goal of what you’ll need. You go from there and see where you end up.”
