Inside Line Promotions – BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (April 10, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi earned a top-five finish during his 410ci winged sprint car debut last Saturday at Kern County Raceway Park.

“We were going there to be a field filler, just another car to race around there,” he said. “We ended up timing in well and running well throughout the feature.”

Scelzi, who was making his season debut driving for Roth Motorsports during the first-ever King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Sprint Car Series event at the track, qualified seventh quickest to open the event.

“The wind was blowing really hard the whole night so it was hard to control the car,” he said. “We went out late for time trials and we timed in seventh, which we were really happy about. That put us in a good position for the heat race. They took the top three to the dash and we ended up running second.”

Scelzi’s qualifying performance lined him up on the outside of the front row for a heat race and he maintained that position throughout the race to lock into the dash. After placing sixth in the dash, Scelzi started the main event on the outside of the third row.

“It was different driving a 410 for the first time,” he said. “You get from Point A to Point B quicker. The track was slick down the straightaways so it’d blow the tires off a lot easier.

“In the main event we got racing really hard with Bud Kaeding and Kyle Hirst. We threw some haymakers out there so that was really fun. Turns one and two were so wide you could throw some huge slide jobs.”

Scelzi battled for a top five throughout the main event before a couple of late passes gave him a fourth-place finish. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/z-DzVhhVMlI.

“I felt that was the best I’ve driven and the most aggressive I’ve been in a sprint car,” he said. “Being in a 410 for the first time, I couldn’t ask for a better handling car. That makes my life learning a lot easier.

“I want to thank Dennis and Teresa Roth for the opportunity and Todd, Cory and Brent for their hard work. It was a great night and I can’t wait to race with the team again.”

Scelzi is scheduled to make his season debut in his family owned sprint car this Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. It will be his first time competing at the bullring.
